But I Won

Text: 2 Cor. 2:14, “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.”

SONG:

The devil and I had a fight, BUT I WON!

Me and devil and can’t agree, I hate him and he hates me.

And I’m still winning!

Give God a victory praise…you’re still winning!

People may have talked, gossiped and judged, but you won.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18

“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”

Shammah

(11) And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines. (12) But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory.[1]

1 Tim. 6:12, “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.”

Matthew 12:9-21

(9)  And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:

(10)  And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.

(11)  And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

(12)  How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

(13)  Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.

(14)  Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

(15)  But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

  • He knew of the plot which they had formed against his life; but his hour was not yet come, and he therefore sought security.
  • By remaining, his presence would only have provoked them further and endangered his own life. He acted, therefore, the part of prudence and withdrew.
  • Just because you can don’t mean you should.
  • “He healed them all.”  Jesus healed their diseases, and preached to them the good news of salvation.[2]

(16)  And charged them that they should not make him known:

(17)  That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

(18)  Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

(19)  He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.

  • He did not shout as a warrior.
  • He is meek, retiring, and peaceful.
  • He didn’t seek publicity, fame and popularity.[3]

(20)  A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.

  • Jesus did not oppress the feeble and poor
  • The “bruised reed” is a type of the brokenness of the soul on account of sin; weeping and mourning for transgression.
  • Jesus will not break it; He will not be severe, unforgiving, and cruel. He will heal you, pardon you, and give you strength.
  • He will not further oppress those who have little strength; nor put out hope and life when it seems to be almost extinct.
  • He will cherish the feeble flame, tend to it and give it the oil of grace until it is kindled into a blaze.
  • He will not allow you to be defeated – BUT I WON!
  • The truth is that the Gospel of Jesus Christ conquer.[4]

(21)  And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

The Portal of Victory:[5]

  1. Intense Prayer
  2. Intense Hunger & Desire
  3. Faith & Expectation

1 John 5:4-5

(4)  For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

(5)  Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

But I Won

Faith’s Report

Text: Hebrews 10:35-11:2

“(35) Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.  (36)  For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.  (37)  For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.  (38)  Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.  (39)  But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. (11:1) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.  (2)  For by it the elders obtained a good report.”

There is a repayment of the faith invested in the things of God.

Patience is faith waiting in the hallway of the hospital to hear the good report that the promised child has been born.

A great amount of faith is tested in the waiting room of life. A promise is given and now we watch and pray, but that is sometimes a mistake.

You see, while we wait for the promise to come, we are also preparing our home and ourselves for the due date.

This is why Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart, Target, and Amazon sell so much baby items.

People are not just waiting around twiddling their thumbs:

• They are painting the nursery room either blue or pink – male or female

• They are shopping for rockers, baby beds, basinets, diaper bags, bottles, car seats, etc.

• They are deciding if they should breast feed the promise, or feed it a bottle

• They are worrying about cost and hoping two nickels can somehow make 50 cents.

• But, most importantly, they are preparing for the day when the promise arrives.

It time to make a plan for arrival time

Faith’s Report is that everyone who lives by faith will receive a good report.

Good Report = “to be a witness, that is, testify (literally or figuratively): – charge, give [evidence], bear record, have (obtain, of) good (honest) report, be well reported of, testify, give (have) testimony, (be, bear, give, obtain) witness.”

The just who live by faith overcome the accuser by:

Revelation 12:10-11, “(10) And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.  (11)  And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”

There is much power in faith. In fact, faith is involved in our justification:

Romans 5:1-2, “(1) Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:  (2)  By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

Peace with God starts with faith in God.

Jeff Arnold said, “Faith is focus on God, fear is focus on your problems.”

Faith’s Report is the the obtaining of a good report through trust in God’s promise that propels an action on our part…an active faith. If observed from that point-of-view, trust can be seen as a step beyond faith.

Hebrews 11:39-12:2, “(39) And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:  (40)  God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect. (12:1) Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,  (2)  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

I can stand a hypocrite

“…and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish” (Job 8:3b)

If you do a cursory google search for the phrase “I can’t stand hypocrites” you’ll find all kinds of results, from the shocking to the mundane. In fact, I use to say, quite emphatically, “I can’t stand a hypocrite!”

However, I’ve come to appreciate the necessity of those poor souls, and I can now stand hypocrites because of what they reveal.

Andrae Crouch wrote a line in the song “Through It All” that reminds me of the necessity of hypocrites:

So I thank God for the mountains
And I thank Him for the valleys
And I thank Him for the storms He’s brought me through
For if I’d never had a problem
I’d never know God could solve them
I’d never know what faith in His word could do

Albert Barnes’ note on this passage: “That there were hypocrites even in that early age of the world. They are confined to no period, or country, or religious denomination, or profession. There are hypocrites in religion – and so there are in politics, and in business, and in friendship, and in morals. There are pretended friends, and pretended patriots, and pretended lovers of virtue, whose hearts are false and hollow, just as there are pretended friends of religion. Wherever there is genuine coin, it will be likely to be counterfeited; and the fact of a counterfeit is always a tribute to the intrinsic worth of the coin – for who would be at the pains to counterfeit that which is worthless? The fact that there are hypocrites in the church, is an involuntary tribute to the excellency of religion.”

Hypocrisy is actually a compliment to the authenticity of the Christian life. So, in a sense, we should thank God for the hypocrite. They remind us of the value of the true and the faithful.

So, I thank God for the hypocrites, for if I’d never met one then I’d never truly know the value of the authentic in comparison to the fake.

I can stand a hypocrite for that reason…

  10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
  11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.

  22. Overprepare, then go with the flow.
  23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.
  24. The most important *** organ is the brain.

  30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
  31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
  32. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

  34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.
  35. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.
  36. Growing old beats the alternative – dying young.

George Washington Carver’s Eight Cardinal Virtues

101 years ago today, George Washington Carver wrote a list of Eight Cardinal Virtues (from a letter to the senior class he taught, dated Jan. 9, 1922):

  1. Be clean both inside and out.
  2. Neither look up to the rich nor down on the poor.
  3. Lose, if need be, without squealing.
  4. Win without bragging.
  5. Always be considerate of women, children, and older people.
  6. Be too brave to lie.
  7. Be too generous to cheat.
  8. Take your share of the world and let others take theirs.

Gideon: Victory Won, Opportunity Lost

“No person should ever feel that their lack inhibits them from being an influence for the Lord Jesus Christ.
Nothing:
Not a lack of education.
Not a lack of Christian pedigree.
Nor a lack of money.
Not the lack of a polished personality
Or being an introvert in a world drawn to extroverts.
The evidence is clear. Almighty God uses unexpected people to influence the outcome of human history.
You can be one of those He uses.
Moreover, you should be one of those He uses.”
